Questions & Answers:

Cave of Twisting Shadows

Upon entering or leaving the CoTS, Primus Doulos, who is a ghost, asks you what you have learned on your journey so far and you must have a brief discussion with him. This is easier to do on the way into the covenant than on the way out.

CoTS is in the Greater Alps Tribunal, and I did in fact attend Tribunal with Prima Muscaria in 1342. It was a short journey so the only accommodations we needed were during Tribunal itself.

During my time with Muscaria she would often go to another covenant and spend a season helping to coax an aged wizard out of a bad Twilight or harvest a tricky vis source or otherwise offer her services to the Order on behalf of the House, building goodwill that tends not to be accrued by the frequently monastic Criamon.

The CoTS quarantined itself once the plague started to penetrate the Alps but Muscaria has been able to convey to me that she and the rest of the covenant are alive, if weakened by having their already tenuous ties to the world around them severed. Several of the elder magi, realizing that to put off doing so any longer would be to unnecessarily tax the resources of the covenant at a time when it cannot be afforded, have entered what is called by some the Final Twilight.

Unfortunately, as the Prima, Muscaria does not have the luxury of entering Final Twilight. Still more unfortunately, the ordinary transition of power has been interrupted by the inability of magi to easily return to the Cave of Twisting Shadows. She is at this point clinging to life and hoping to outlast either the plague or creation; whichever ends first.

While I was a young apprentice - despite receiving a fair amount of attention from Muscaria who would note my answers to many peculiar questions, often posing them again six months or a year later - my unsupervised time was often spent in the company of one of the covenant’s more reliable folk, Lysa. She was middle-aged mother with great, low-hanging breasts and many stories. The air around her was always scented with spices and somehow she (or her pet cat Sven) always had time to indulge me in some childish frolicking. Similar to Muscaria, she was a stern woman who couldn’t help but soften at my large wet eyes. She is not alive, but she never was when I knew her either. She is one of the many ghosts who reside in the levels of the Cave which are closer to the mundane world.

I was apprenticed to House Criamon and don’t so much “like it” as appreciate having been selected into the one House that is committed to the great work of liberating all beings from torment. I have been told that this is very important. When Prima Muscaria turned me into a candle flame for a Moon I learned a great deal about being trapped in what appears from the outside to be a pleasant and stable form. Muscaria is in the minority of Criamon who continue to alter their physical forms beyond those that are natural to the contemplation of the Enigma, though she did not impose any such mortification on myself. I would come to learn that this is on the short list of forbidden practices, as Criamon himself was tortured by his own mentor.

My mater was acquainted with Theodora and so she brought Aeliana to the Cave of Twisting Shadows in about 1333 to spend a season. They played word games and riddles, I was 15 and she was 13. Aeliana was certainly curious and after an initial response of "....why is this happening", was very happy to participate in riddles and puzzles.

I spent two seasons while an apprentice as a guest at [COVENANT - Praximadia?] where I met Flora and Fauna, the Mercere twins, whom I immediately adopted as my surrogate siblings and began to play Older Magical Friend, posing riddles in the manner of my own mater. (wait were they never together? - 1327-1334 they were together in Praximadia, just before gauntleting.)

When I was eleven years old I met a boy who was apprenticed at Valnastium, about two days [I MADE THIS UP] ride from the Cave of Twisting Shadows. A Tremere-to-be named Pyrrhus, We had both spent a lot of time outside, so I naturally  asked him why he thinks the earth grows grass when if it wished to be softer it could simply be mud. He seemed to think this was a joke, and he did not find it very interesting. I learned that the Tremere like ghosts, and I asked Prima Muscaria if we might introduce them to the ghosts in the Cave. She seemed to think it would not be a good use of time.

When mater and I were on our longest journey, to the Levant in 1330, when I was still a small girl, I saw death for the first time. From the road we heard the groaning of a beggar too weak to leave him small camp. Muscaria quietly waited while I investigated and found a man about to succumb to a terrible illness. Muscaria asked what I wanted to do and I said I would stay and give him water and try to build up his fire. She did not remark on this but she did not tell me to do otherwise. I believe she stayed nearby to watch as I took care of him. He did not die for three miserable days. There was no chance of saving him. I am neither doctor nor priest. I do not know if there was a lesson in this but I could smell his sickness for a long time after I, with some struggle, coaxed an adequate amount of earth over his body.

I follow the Western Rite, as I was baptized in Venezia. I don't remember ever being in a church, but there is a priest, Father Sven, who lives in a valley between the Cave and the nearest village, ministering to both. He smells like sheep.

I make my home at Shrouded Bay, where I have joined the strange and deteriorated magi here attempting to wake Old Histria into a new Spring. (more)

(covenant vis)

(covenant grogs)

The magical being who resides at the covenant is a female form who is mistaken for a spirit, a faerie, or a maga depending on who encounters her. She refers to herself as The Priestess, typically speaks in Greek (though seems to have command of many languages), and is generally hostile. Her attitude toward me is at the very least playful, and she often attempts to distract me while I am harvesting vis.

(covenant rules)

(tribunal stuff)

I went on an adventure with Theosophus of Bonisagus. He visited me while I was at work investigating the magical creatures of Old Histria. We talked at length over the magical properties of Vim and how it relates to the Four Elements. He found a magical fae snake that he thoughtfully removed from the premises, and I found a glass sphere which when looked through will reveal the presence of the lingering dead.

(more details for all of that to come)
